Painting by Drawing: Watercolor Pencils

Happy December!
If you want to make something nice as the holidays come up, a simple drawing/painting project is done easily with watercolor pencils. I discovered these over the summer, and I've been using them constantly ever since. They work great if you struggle with detailed painting or eye-hand-brush coordination. The material of the pencils melt when they come in contact with water. Drawing and then brushing over with water is great to make a difficult drawing into a painting. I also discovered that drawing with a wet tip  makes a bold, thick, watery looking line that also looks beautiful on a white background. The bottom images are a before and after using the water to blend a tri-colored blob (for lack of a better word). I really recommend choosing a few colors that are related and blending them together to create scenery or maybe just a unique color.

Watercolor papered cards are what I've been using with my pencil set. I would say avoid normal papers that are thin and flimsy. I even made a pretty painting in my sketchbook that ended totally wrecked because it dried up to look like a wrinkly mess. But now at least I've leaned not to make that mistake again...
Even so, normal paper works just fine as a practice before you use up all your good watercolor paper! My pencils are Watercolour 12 by Derwent. Enjoy your art and have a wonderful day!
